Monica gave me this big bowl of glas and I've had a choice of fruit to put in for this painting. Grapes are always nice to paint, even behind glas. The lemon shows a good contrast between the pomegranate and the grapes. Besides it's interesting not to have the whole bowl.
Up to now I'm quite happy with the fruit, but not with the background. I think I let this dry and put on some glazes later.

Monica hat mir diese große Glasschale geschenkt und ich habe eine Auswahl von Früchten für dieses Bild. Trauben sind gut zu malen, sogar hinter Glas. Die Zitrone bringt einen guten Kontrast zwischen dem Granatapfel und den Trauben. Außerdem ist es spannend nicht die ganze Schale zu sehen.
Bisher bin ich ziemlich zufrieden mit den Früchten, aber nicht mit dem Hintergrund. Ich denke, ich lasse alles trocknen und füge später einige Lasierungen hinzu.

When I was looking into the studio garden last week, I saw a small yellow spot and found this single rose. However, I'm not sure if this is the last rose of autumn - though it is over anyway - or the first after winter (What winter?). Thus, I put it into a glas with water to rescue it for the freezing temperatures that are to come the next days.

Als ich letzte Woche in den Ateliergarten schaute, sah ich einen kleinen gelben Punkt und fand diese einzige Rose. Ich bin mir jedoch nicht sicher, ob sie die letzte des Herbstes ist - obwohl der sowieso schon längest vorbei ist - oder die erst nach dem Winter (Welcher Winter?). So stellte ich sie in ein Wasserglas, um sie vor den frostigen Temperaturen zu retten, die in den nächsten Tagen kommen sollen.

This time I've not just drawn with a nib but ended up using a brush, and because the ink is watersoluble sepia ink the lines are partly smugged a bit.

Pomegranate - Granatapfel

I'm preparing to paint a pomegranate and I've started with watercolours today first because I've had one at home and second because I saw a documentary about a small village in Armenia, where just pomegranate farmers live. I didn't know that such a tree blooms three times a year, but they are harvested only once. The oldest fruit are the biggest and most expensive and there at least two different kinds of pomegranates: red ones and white ones that are sweeter than the red ones. So, I felt a bit encouraged to take this chap from the fridge, put it on my window-sill on the other side of a grey day.

Ich bereite mich grade auf das Malen eines Granatapfels vor und habe heute schon einmal einen in Aquarell begonnen, weil ich erstens einen zu Hause hatte und zweitens weil ich heute eine Dokumentation über ein kleinen armenisches Dorf gesehen habe, wo ausschließlich Granatapfelbauern leben. Ich wusste nicht, dass diese Bäume drei Mal im Jahr blühen, aber sie werden nur einmal geerntet. Die ältesten Früchte sind die größten und teuersten und es gibt mindestens zwei verschiedene Sorten von Granatäpfeln: rote und weiße, die süßer sind als die roten. Deshalb fühlte ich mich animiert, diesen Kerl aus dem Kühlschrank zu holen, ihn auf die Fensterbank zu legen auf der anderen Seite eines grauen Tages.

This time I've chosen another older work that is up to date in Bremen once a year for two weeks - because of the Bremen Freimarkt, the fifth season beside winter, spring a.s.o. Today the Freimarkt has been burried, as every year after the two weeks. So, this is a very sweet memory full of heart.

Dieses Mal habe ich ein weiteres älteres Werk ausgewählt, dass jedoch jedes Jahr für zwei Wochen hochaktuell ist - wegen des Bremer Freimarkts, der fünften Jahreszeit neben dem Winter, Frühling usw.. Heute wurde der Freimarkt begraben, so wie jedes Jahr nach den zwei Wochen. So ist dies eine sehr süße Erinnerung voller Herz.

This quinze has been waiting for some days in the fridge of the studio and today I had a sniff of it. There was a very fresh and mixture of lemon and grapefruit in my nose... This piece of green marble I found in a rubbish container and I rescued it.

Diese Quitte hat schon einige Tage im Kühlschrank des Ateliers gewartet und heute habe ich an ihr geschnuppert. Da war eine frischen Mischung aus Zitrone und Grapefruit in meiner Nase... Dieses Stück grünen Marmor habe ich einem Schuttcontainer gefunden und es gerettet.

Slowly I get used to ink. Yesterday I bought a selection of nibs and a penholder. I tried them in the evening. Now, I know that I don't like the hard ones, but the softer ones. I did ink work in the art lessons at school long ago, but now it's easier to understand what is important and what is not. In landscape it's the reduction.

Langsam gewöhne ich mich an Tinte. Gestern kaufte ich eine Auswahl von Federn und Federhaltern. Ich habe sie abends ausprobiert. Nun weiß ich, dass ich weniger die harten als die weichen Federn mag. Ich schon damals in der Schule gemacht, aber jetzt ist es leichter zu verstehen, was wichtig ist und was nicht. Bei Landschaft ist es die Reduktion.

This is one more work with ink. It's very interesting that you have to pay a lot of attention to the structure of the subject, perhaps more than of the values.

With this painting I start another blog related to this one: Some of you already know that I've got a heart for literature and it seems that early evenings make people think and read - and even write more. It seems it's the same with me. Up to now I've written poems for paintings, but some late nights ago I thought that very short stories might also be possible. I've given it a go and you can read the first one you follow the link under this painting. If there is a story, there will be a link in future.

Mit diesem Bild beginne ich einen neuen Blog, der mit diesem hier verbunden ist: Einige von euch wissen bereits, dass ich ein Herz für Literatur habe und es scheint, dass die frühen Abende die Menschen mehr zum Denken und Lesen - und sogar zum Schreiben bringen. Bei mir ist es wohl genauso. Bis jetzt habe ich Gedichte zu Bildern geschrieben, aber vor einigen späten Abenden dachte ich, dass auch sehr kurze Geschichten möglich sein könnten. Ich habe einen Versuch gemacht und nun kan man den ersten lesen, wenn man dem Link unter diesem Bild folgt. Wenn es eine Geschichte gibt, wird in Zukunft auch ein Link zu finden sein.

This kind of bread is called "Herkules" and when I wanted to buy I said: "A Herkules, please!" and I added that everybody would like to have a Hercules. Everybody around me was smiling so that the shop assistant just put it in the bread slicer, but I haven't told him to. So, I tried to call him back. "I'd like to have a whole Herkules." Everybody laughed and I got a whole one and not the sliced Herkules...

Diese Brotsorte wird "Herkules" genannt und als ich eines kaufen wollte, sagte ich: "Einen Herkules bitte!", und ich fügte hinzu, dass jeder gern einen Herkules hätte. Alle um mich herum lächelten, so dass der Verkäufer das Brot einfach in die Brotschneidemaschine steckte, aber ich hatte nicht darum gebeten. Deshalb versuchte ich ihn davon abzuhalten. "Ich möchte gern einen ganzen Herkules." Alle lachten und bekam einen ganzen und nicht den geschnittenen Herkules...

You can put it on a big easel to paint small paintings. That is usually a quite rickety thing to do.

Man kann sie auf eine große Staffelei stellen, um kleinere Bilder zu malen. Sonst ist das eine recht wackelige Angelegenheit.

Besides there are screws that can fix the small upper wood lath or free the panel or canvas.

Außerdem sind daran Schrauben, die die kleine Holzleiste fixieren oder das Paneel oder die Leinwand erlösen kann.

Finally you can use is independently as easel on a table.

Und zu guter Letzt kann man sie ganz unabhängig benutzen - als Tischstaffelei.

This apple has just fallen from our tree in the garden. It's a very big red russet and there are many more of them still hanging in the tree. The apple harvest must be very good this year.

Dieser Apfel ist gerade von unserem Baum im Garten gefallen. Er ist ein großer roter Boskop and und dort hängen noch viel mehr von ihnen im Baum. Die Apfelernte muss dieses Jahr sehr gut sein.

This guy was flying aimlessly back and forth over Kirchweyhe and landed on the old fire brigade siren. Perhaps there was a reason: Years ago there had been a nest nearby; maybe he was born there. The base for this sketch was one of the photos taken by my father. Another one was shown from the local TV station.

Dieser Kerl flog ziellos hin und her über Kirchweyhe und landete auf der alten Feuerwehrsirene. Es könnte einen Grund dafür geben: Vor Jahren war dort in der Nähe ein Nest; vielleicht war er dort geboren worden. Die Basis für diese Skizze war eines der Fotos, die von meinem Vater gemacht worden sind. Ein anderes wurde im lokalen TV-Sender gezeigt.

This is the 3rd wood painting from the Hainich. I tried to do it how Kevin MacPherson advises in his book "Oil Paintings with Light & Color". I really liked to read it because he gets straight to the point so that you can remember his advice very easily.

You can also find this kind of landscape on the Danish island Fanoe. Unhappily, there were not just us in the pinewood. but also some hungry mosquitos.

Man kann auch diese Art von Landschaft auf der dänischen Insel Fanoe finden. Leider waren nicht nur wir im Kiefernwald, sondern auch einige hungrige Mücken.

Path to the Beach - Weg zum Strand

With this painting I've started to use the paper samples I ordered from the U.S.. Nearly all of them are sanded papers and for the first two I can say the sand is stronger on the papers than those I usually use as support. This way I saw at Soenderho Beach on Fanoe. The colours of the beach grass, the beach and the sky attracted me and perhaps you, too O:-)

Mit diesem Bild habe ich begonnen die Papiermuster, die ich den USA bestellt hatte, zu benutzen. Fast alle sind Sandpapier und für die ersten beiden kann ich sagen, dass der Sand fester am Papier klebt als jene, die ich normalerweise als Untergrund nehme.
Diesen Weg sah ich bei Soenderho Strand auf Fanoe. Mich sprachen die Farben des Strandhafers, der Strandes und des Himmel an und vielleicht euch auch O:-)

When I started this, I actually stood in the sea - in rubber boots. I'd bought a paint board that is like a sales tray. You just put a belt over one shoulder. So, you can stand while painting without using an easel. However, it wasn't easy to paint standing in the water while the sand was slowly clinging to the boots... Later at our nice holiday cottage I added some pastels, again.

Als ich dieses begann, stand ich tatsächlich im Meer - in Gummistiefeln. Ich hatte mir ein Malbord gekauft, dass wie ein Bauchladen. Du hängst dir nur einen Gurt über die Schulter. So kann man während des Malens stehen ohne eine Staffelei zu benutzen. Jedoch war es nicht so einfach im Wasser stehend zu malen, während der Sand sich langsam an den Gummistiefeln festgesaugt hat... Später im Ferienhaus habe ich wieder Pastell hinzugefügt.

On Fanoe you are allowed to go on the beach by car. So, this is not an unusal scene.

Auf Fanoe ist es erlaubt mit dem Auto an den Strand zu fahren. Dies ist also keine ungewöhnliche Szene.

Ist es nicht interessant zu sehen, dass Dänisch zumindest teilweise aus Englisch und Deutsch besteht? Jedoch, muss auch einiges an Norwegischem dabei sein... noch etwas?
Ich liebe diese großen dänischen Brötchen. Sie lassen uns unsere Liebe zu deutschem Brot vergessen O;-)
