Roof in Winter - Dach im Winter (Sketch)

Yesterday morning the sun tried to climb over the roof opposite our house and to fought its way through the clouds. In the early afternoon it succeeded, but just for some minutes.

Gestern Morgen versuchte die Sonne über das Dach gegenüber zu klettern und sich durch die Wolken zu kämpfen. Am frühen Nachmitag hatte sie Erfolg, aber nur für ein paar Minuten.

  1. Interesting how effective a pencil drawing can be. You have captured the movement of the cloud with the bright light coming through really well Ulrike. I like the strength of the dark pencil work on the chimney and also on the slate roof. Great work!
How are the skies going? I was stuck painting the washroom today and tonight there is a problem with the heating due to one of the radiators having a wee leak! I am managing to do plenty of research on skies though.

  2. Time is flying. I'm going to the dentist today and take Carlson with me for the waiting room O;-) In the afternoon I've got two hours to paint before tutoring. Phew!

  3. Well then you will need to be super organised and have your paints ready with canvas for those two hours, it is amazing how much can be done in just two hours. Do you paint in the evening too? I make a start today after much reading however not easy to get information onto the canvas!! This is funny you taking Carlson to the dentist waiting room!

  4. Perhaps I'll paint in the evenings. Depends on my time O;-) Yes, indeed it's really to get all information in. My second one is getting much too dark, but I can work on it tomorrow.
I didn't have to wait long with Carlson on my lab. But he's in my bag all the time.
How was your start? Anything finished, yet?

  5. Yes I have done as much as I can to my first one. I think I have too many clouds in! Not so easy to do such a simple graduation and also to keep the inspiration going too!
What time of day is your second one at? are you going to do a night time one?

  6. I've got a cloudy evening one on my easel with just one stripe of light, seen a week a go, but working from memory is very hard with skies, I think. Today there's a non-sky over Bremen.

  7. Oh it is not so easy to paint from memory Ulrike. Have you read the latest on Loriann's blog on memory painting? Loriann Signori painting a day blog. I am so tempted to buy the American Tonalism book!
I painted a summer sky over a beach today, the light in the afternoons being so short lived that the dim twilight comes in quite quickly. That is why I rarely paint at night as in daylight the painting will never look so good! I had to work some more on my first painting this morning to tone down some of the bright colour I had added last night!
I hope your cloudy evening painting went well today.

  8. Yes, I did read it because you told me to O:-) I'm still not happy with the cloudy one and started another memory one. It's so hard to drive the car and try to get and keep the colours around. Today there's just fog O:-(
I continued painting in the dark, but I found that quite useless if you paint a light sky.+
There's much work to be done...

  9. You can work from photos if the weather is not good outside. The important thing is to paint and learn. I work on two today it is all I do apart from the laundry and some housework in the morning then I work from midday until 5.30pm, it is a good session, as also in that time I look and study the sky. I have now completed four paintings though two will need some more work.
There is indeed much work to be done..... (Louis you make the food this weekend ha!)
