What is helpful is to stand outside at dawn and the sunset and to make notes on paper of the colours that you are seeing in the sky, I do this a lot. Then do some test samples to see if you can recreate what you saw. If you can find a nice photo and there are many on the cloud appreciation society website and work from that if you find the colours a little untrue you can still use your notes you have made from the skies you have observed. Working from memory is not easy and when studying the sky it is hard to work without a reference.
