Course Work: Susanne's Snowland - Susannes Schneeland

Susanne is working with watersoulible oil colours. With oil colours there is always a special point in time when you should stop and I think this is the point O:-)

Austrian Cake: Sachertorte

This beautiful and delicious chocolate cake has a history of more than 175 years. Prince Metternich asked for a special cake as a dessert for very important guests in 1832, but the chief cook was ill and the 16 years old Franz Sacher tried hi luck. Everybody was happy, the cake was great, however, nobody took notice of this cake creation. His son Eduard did a training at the confectioner Demel and brought back the cake. Later he also sold it at his own hotel.
His descendants had a long arguement about who was allowed to selll the "original Sachertorte", but there has never been a strict recipe for it. It is a cocoa cake mixture with one or two layers of apricot marmalade in the middle and of course the chocolate coating.

Medium

Medium I mostly use with soft brushes when it comes to an end of an oil painting because it makes the paint smooth and and fluent and you can build wonderful transparent layers with it.

German Cake: Cheese Cream Cake - Käse-Sahne-Torte

I've known this kind of cake since my birth, but there doesn't seem to be any history behind it. What a bity! It is just mentioned that it is not a typical cheese cake because the cheese cream mixture is not baked but added after the baking of the sponge. This is cut into layers and the cheese cream is now inbetween. At the end a thin layer of icing sugar is sieved on top.

German Cake: Black Forest Gateau - Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte

The Black Forest gateau or cherry cake seems to be THE German cake. There are a lot of stories about its origins - the funniest was the idea that this cake was invented by an eunuch in the Middle East. Actually, there were two German confectioners in the 20th of the last century who were the first ones wiriting the recipe down, but there are also voices saying that it is from Switzerland because there it's called "Schwarzwaldkuchen". From the 1930s on this cake has made his way around the world. Almost everybody seems to know it. Perhaps not everybody know that it is made with a lot of whipped cream, dark sponge mixture, kirsch and grated fine chocolate.
Such a precious piece was difficult to transport as you can certainly imagine. O:-)
