Some Advice (1) - Einige Ratschläge (1)

A sea friend showed me some paintings lately. He was not that satisfied with them. In this case it is of big value to ask someone else. A fresh new view that doesn’t stick to the painting, and you know quite quickly how to go on:

Neulich zeigte mir ein Seefreund einige Bilder, mit denen er nicht ganz zufrieden war. Da ist es sehr viel wert einen dritten zur Rate zu ziehen. Ein frischer neuer Blick, der nicht am eigenen Werk klebt, und schon weiß man, wie es weitergehen kann:

 

This Shrimp has wonderful hights and depth. You see where the shell gleams and where the tail and eyes are and where the shells overlap.

However, this background… sometimes less is actually more:

1. Die color comes directly from the tube and is very saturated. It takes the importace from the shrimp.
2. There are already (because of some used salt) very many contrasts in the background. That makes the filigree “drown”.

Conclusion:

This Background does the painting no good.

Advice:

With good paper you’ve got the possibility to get some of the color off the painting with some papers of the good old kitchen roll – please, very carefully so that nothing happens to the shrimp.
If that is successfull it would be useful to change the color to reduce its saturation and give it to the shirmp. I’d advice a grey nuance that you can get with adding with watery red.

Die Krabbe oder der Granat, grade so wie man es in Norddeutschland bezeichnen möchte, hat wunderbare Höhen und Tiefen. Man sieht, wo die Schale glänzt und wo Schwanz, Augen und die Schalen überlappen.
Aber dieser Hintergund… manchmal ist weniger wirklich mehr:

1. Die Farbe kommt direkt aus dem Napf und ist sehr satt. Sie nimmt der Krabbe sozusagen die Wichtigkeit.
2. Es sind (durch die Nutzung von Salzkristallen) bereits sehr viele Kontraste im Hintergrund, was noch mehr das Filigrane, was die Krabbe ausmacht, “übertönt”.

Fazit:

Dieser Hintergrund tut dem Bild überhaupt nicht gut.

Tipps:

Bei gutem Papier ist es möglich, den Hintergrund noch einmal anzulösen, um mit einem oder mehrern Tüchern der guten alten Küchenrolle jene Farbe wieder abzunehmen – das bitte aber sehr vorsichtig, damit der Krabbe nichts passiert.
Wenn das gelingt, wäre es nützlich, den Farbton zu ändern, damit er nicht satter wirkt als die Krabbe selbst. Meine Empfehlung wäre ein grauer Farbton, den man mit einer Zugabe von wässrigem Rot erreichen kann.

What about a Print (1) - Wie wäre es mit einem Druck? (1)

There are so many printing companies around and I gave one a try and was quite happy with the results.

This tiny pencil painting was originally just 10x10cm. Now the size is 20x20cm. It's printed on paper and put on foam with a longlife sticking stripe on its back so that you can change its place very often. Besides it's very light.

Es gibt so viele Druckfirmen, und ich probierte eine aus und war ziemlich glücklich mit dem Ergebnis.

Dieses kleine Bleistift-Gemälde war im Original nur 10x10cm groß. Nun ist seine Größe 20x20cm. Es ist auf papier gedruckt und dann auch Foamboard gezogen mit einem langlebigen Klebestreifen auf der Rückseite, so dass man den Platz des Bildes sehr oft verändern kann. Außerdem ist es sehr leicht.

Some times you need just some time outside your own work place to think and manage new ideas. The time at the beginning of a year is good for that. What do you think?

The last work of the triptych - my memory of childhood I don't want to miss a thing although I still have all of them in my possession. Here it is the small fork I've had in my hands from the time on I could eat with not just my hands.

Das letzte Werk des Triptychons - meine Kindheitserinnerung, die ich nicht missen möchte, obwohl sie immer noch in meinem Besitz ist. Hier ist es die kleine Gabel, die ich seit dem Moment in meinen Händen halte, seitdem ich nicht nur mit meinen Händen essen konnte.

Live-Painting yesterday... gestern

Yesterday I did a live paiting session at bundt. Without really knowing what I'd paint I packed my equipment in a box and went off.
It was great to find some very interested women coming already when I haven't really started anything. So, I had to find an object very quickly and choose the reliable fruit kiwi on a card box Christiane Böttcher from bundt offered me.

Gestern hielt ich eine Live-Mal-Session im bundt ab. Ohne wirklich zu wissen, was ich eigentlich malen wollte, packte ich meine Utensilien zusammen und fuhr los.
Es war toll, gleich einige sehr interessierte Damen hereinkomen zu sehen, noch bevor ich wirklich angefangen hatte. also musst ich das Objekt recht schnell finden und wählte die verlässliche Frucht Kiwi und einen Pappkarton, den Christiane Böttcher von bundt mir anbot, aus.

My viewers found their places to see best and asked a lot. Most of them also paint. From the golden cut via the point of interest to contrasts...

Meine Zuschauer fanden ihre Plätze, um gut zu sehen, und fragten eine Menge. Die meisten malen selbst. Vom goldenen Schnitt über den Punkt des Interesses bis zu Kontrasten...

Cutlery Series (5) - Besteckserie (5)

On the way to the final sprint - the fork - the third painting of the series is already finished, but I'd like to show you its progress.
As you see I used a pencil to sketch the most important parts. It's always good to sketch less than more.

Auf dem Weg zum Endspurt - die Gabel - das dritte Gemälde der Serie ist bereits fertig, aber ich möchte euch gern sein Fortschreiten zeigen.
Wie man sieht habe ich einen Bleistift zum Skizzieren der wichtigsten Teile benutzt. Es ist immer gut, weniger als mehr vorzuzeichnen.

Here you see the first paint: a bright red with a little yellow. I started with them because they are bright, brighter than those to come, and easy so mix. Besides, these are the parts where you discover the reflections of me in the fork.

Hier sieht man die ersten Farben: ein strahlendes Rot mit etwas Gelb. Ich begann mit ihnen, weil sie eben strahlend sind, strahlender als jene, die noch kommen, und einfach zu mischen. Außerdem sind dieses jene Anteile, in denen man die Reflektionen von mir in der Gabel entdeckt.

I continued with painting the fork to connec the reflections and the local colors of the fork. Then I put in the background.

Ich fuhr fort mit dem Malen der Gabel, um die Reflektionen mit den tatsächlichen Farben der Gabel (Lokalfarbe) zu verbinden. Dann legte ich den Hintergrund an.
